SLC District 1

Salt Lake City’s west side students have unique lived experiences that make them who they are. By focusing on access and inclusion, my goal is to ensure these students are included in discussions that happen in the district and at the board table. I also want to help ensure that our students have access to the same quality programs and services that are available at east side schools, as well as programs that are tailored to them.

Community support is a critical factor in a student’s education. I believe that parents and community members should be part of the shared governance process in educational decisions. I will continue to advocate for processes that allow students and parents to be involved, which include meeting times that allow working parents to be involved and communications that are available in multiple languages. I will continue to participate in school community councils and will also establish a board of directors to advise me on district decisions that impact students and families. This board will include students, parents, teachers, and community members in Precinct 1.

Student success cannot and should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. Each student is different and needs different things to be successful while at school and when they embark on their next steps beyond graduation. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges when it comes to student success, creating a need for new pathways toward success. I will work with the Board of Education and district administrators to explore unique ways in which we can help every child be successful. Additionally, I will work with the Salt Lake City School District to increase services around social and emotional learning as well as academic success measures and programs.
